Messier Catalogue

The Messier catalogue is a collection of 110 astronomical objects that were observed by the French astronomer Charles Messier in the 18th century. He was looking for comets, but he found many other interesting objects that were not comets.

These objects include galaxies, star clusters and nebulae. Some of them are very bright and can be seen with a small telescope or even with the naked eye. The Messier catalogue is still used today by amateur astronomers who want to explore the wonders of the night sky.

This gallery is a collection of my best astrophotography from the Messier catalogue, however, it is worth noting that objects can often be associated with multiple catalogues.

Our Solar System

The solar system is a collection of celestial bodies that orbit the sun, a massive star that provides light and heat. The sun is the center of the solar system and holds everything together with its gravity.

The solar system has eight planets: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. Each planet has its own characteristics, such as size, shape, atmosphere, and moons.

The solar system also contains many smaller objects, such as asteroids, comets, dwarf planets (like Pluto), and Kuiper belt objects. The solar system is part of a larger structure - our galaxy - the Milky Way.

This gallery is a collection of my favourite astrophotography of objects and events that have occurred within our solar system.

RCW Catalogue

The RCW catalogue is a list of 182 emission nebulae in the southern Milky Way. It was compiled by Rodgers, Campbell and Whiteoak in 1960. It includes many objects from the earlier Gum catalogue. It overlaps with the Caldwell and Sharpless catalogues.

New General Catalogue (NGC)

The New General Catalogue (NGC) is an astronomical catalogue compiled by John Louis Emil Dreyer in 1888. It includes a variety of celestial objects such as galaxies, star clusters, and emission nebulae. Dreyer went on to publish another two object lists known as the Index Catalogues (IC) in 1895 and 1908.

The NGC catalogue builds upon the work of William and Caroline Herschel, as well as John Herschel's General Catalogue of Nebulae and Clusters of Stars. The NGC catalogue includes objects south of the celestial equator thanks to the observations of John Herschel and James Dunlop.

This gallery is a collection of astrophotography from the NGC catalogue and includes objects from the IC catalogue.

Sharpless Catalogue

The Sharpless catalogue is a list of 313 H II regions (emission nebulae). H II regions are clouds of ionized hydrogen gas that glow because of the radiation from nearby hot stars. The catalogue was compiled by the American astronomer Stewart Sharpless in two editions, published in 1953 and 1959. Sharpless used the images from the Palomar Sky Survey to identify and catalog the H II regions. He also included some planetary nebulae and supernova remnants in his catalogue, but some of them were later removed by other astronomers.
