Sh2-34 The Forgotten Nebula.
This faint beauty drifts in the constellation of Sagittarius.
Not a headline nebula like Orion or Carina, but that’s what makes it special, a hidden whisper of the Milky Way that only long exposures and patience can reveal.

✨ Behold M13 – the Great Hercules Cluster 💪🪐

Tucked away in the constellation Hercules, this glittering ball of starlight is one of the brightest globular clusters in the northern sky. Home to about 300,000 stars, all crammed into a region just 145 light-years across, it’s basically the cosmic equivalent of an overcrowded nightclub… except the music is hydrogen fusion and the disco ball is 12 billion years old.

Spotted with binoculars as a fuzzy smudge, but through a telescope (or a decent astro cam 😉) it explodes into a sea of ancient suns. These stars are some of the oldest in the galaxy—burning away long before Earth even existed.

Fun fact: In 1974, humanity beamed a radio message toward M13 (the Arecibo Message), just in case any aliens fancy a chat. Still no RSVP. 👽

⭐ Age: ~12 billion years

Sitting in the constellation Scorpius, just above the stinger of the scorpion, is Messier 6 (M6), better known as the Butterfly Cluster. And yes, if you squint hard enough, it sort of does look like a butterfly in flight, with two sweeping wings of stars spread across the sky.

This is an open star cluster about 1,600 light-years away, containing around 100 young stars. Most of them are hot, blue, B-type stars shining brilliantly against the backdrop of the Milky Way. But what makes M6 truly pop is its brightest star, an orange K-type giant named BM Scorpii, which adds a warm amber glow to an otherwise blue-white sea of light.

At only 100 million years old, M6 is practically a cosmic teenager compared to ancient globular clusters. Through binoculars, it’s a dazzling sprinkle of diamonds. Through a telescope, the “butterfly” shape really flutters to life.

First noted by Giovanni Battista Hodierna in 1654 and later catalogued by Charles Messier in 1764, it’s one of the southern sky’s most breathtaking clusters, best seen on warm winter nights here in Australia when Scorpius dominates the north.
